Biopol introduces itself to its entities

13/10/2009

The director of the Consortium, Dr. Ramon López, has been introducing the strategic guidelines, objectives and future prospects of Biopol'H to the entities that make up this project during the month of September. The professionals at the Campus of the University of Barcelona, Bellvitge Hospital, IDIBELL (Bellvitge Institute for Biomedical Research), ICO (Catalan Institute of Oncology) and IDI (Institute of Diagnostic Imaging) had the opportunity to approach a new future not only concerning his business, but also their environment. Biopol is defined as a center of scientific and technological knowledge that, together with the transformation of the territory, will respond to the needs of people.

The Biopol Consortium was established on 20 November 2008 and started its activity last March. The project will create a science district in the south of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat. In recent months, the special plans of Biopol-Mountain and Biopol-Sea have been approved. These urban plans will enable the creation of a science park, a new building of 17,500 m2 for Ferrer Laboratories, two research buildings, the expansion of the UB classroom facilities, a new animal facility and the refurbishment of the dental and podiatry clinic. Besides the biotechnological facilities, a 218,000 m2 green area, similar to the Ciutadella Park, will be created.

The next institutions to enter the Biopol space will be CSIC (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas) and IBEC (Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia). This will represent a concentration of 1,200 scientists from the public and private sectors, which may turn the Science and Technology Park of Health Sciences into a Spanish reference.
