Biopolis, by FO Architects and Sabaté Associats, is the winning proposal of the competition of ideas for planning Biopol’H Seaside area. The selected idea responds to the objective of turning the Science Park of Biopol'H into a leading benchmark with an international exposure in the field of clinical research. It is a project adjusted to the development of its functions as an excellence centre in research and management. The urban planning wants this area to be a reference within the urban environment of L'Hospitalet.
The project consists of four stages: parking, IIBB/CSIC (Barcelona Institute of Biomedical Research) building, Science Park building and Particle Accelerator building. Biopol'H Science Park will have 10 floors and a large central atrium - agora - providing access to the different parts which make up the building. The basements of IIBB and Science Park have been put together in order to make a profit of common areas and share the technical spaces and the construction of laboratories.
There has been special attention to sustainability through improving energy efficiency and a system to make use of rainwater for the toilets, watering and cleaning, among others.
The jury praised Sabaté Associats’ project for its functionality, the environmental quality and visual impact, the volumetric concentration of the building, the ensured public space, the inner atrium, for floors with no concentrations and the provision of having a single ground for each performance.
The project is part of Biopol’H Seaside Special Plan, which is fully complete with the building for Molecular Diagnosis and Ferrer Group building. The Special Plan was approved in March 2010 by the Generalitat of Catalonia. The initiative will make it possible to give fresh impetus to the cluster Biopol'H.
