UB’s Project Health University of Barcelona Campus (HUBc) has been one of the finalists selected by the technical committee to apply for Excellence Campus 2010.
The environment of HUBc is an area where the capacities of both cities (Barcelona and L’Hospitalet de Llobregat) will be put together from three arteries mainly: firstly, the Medicine Campus - Clínic August Pi i Sunyer together with Sant Joan de Déu Hospital - and secondly, the Bellvitge Health Sciences Campus, Biopol in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (Biopol’H) and Zona Franca. The campus offers more than 30 qualifications with degrees, postgraduate courses and masters and, for the time being, about 500 clinical trials and an average of 120 doctoral theses are being conducted every year, as some outstanding data justifying the fortitude of a campus like this.
The HUBc, which receives huge support from public and private institutions, is considered as a conversion project towards international excellence with the ultimate aim of consolidating a drive of sustainable economic development, the regional transformation and the promotion of a model committed to the social milieu including the bet on innovation and knowledge in the field of health as the mainstays to improve people’s health against the challenges posed by the new global needs. This strategic alliance with the productive sector encourages the high capacity of both internationalization and excellence. In this sense, the main power of HUBc is the high level of specialization in the field of health, which will also provide the capacity for talent attraction. The HUBc project is an initiative of training, research and knowledge transfer that includes all disciplines of health sciences. This aggregation aims to coordinate, stimulate and promote biomedicine, biotechnology and medical technologies with the purpose of improving population’s quality of life. The HUBc project has received a total grant of 560,000 for the different subprogrammes of International Excellence Campus, particularly 180,000 euro go to the excellence subprogramme and 380,000 are intended for strengthening the projects related to the creation of a centre for vocational training and superior formative courses in health sciences, to the construction of a hall of residence and the project of the UB Factoria Digital, for the development of the health campus. Furthermore, this project has been also selected to participate in the call Innocampus of the Ministry of Science and Innovation.
