Under the title “Collaborative Innovation”, Andrés G. Fernández, Head of Innovation in Biotechnology, Ferrer Grupo, tackled the most relevant trends in the transformation of the pharmaceutical industry in the latest edition of "Coffee with ..."
Andrés G. Fernández focused his presentation on the new paradigm of research: the collaboration between the Academy and the pharmaceutical industry, not to mention the roles that arise in the value chain of the industry and the synergies with the sector of research and biotechnology.
Due to the increasing loss of efficiency and competitiveness of the sector - as Fernández explained - the pharmaceutical industry has tried to find solutions through three different courses of action. These courses are directed toward an increase of the efficiency in both the corporate level and in terms of R&D, in addition of the wish to ensure the sustainability of the system by adapting the regulatory environment.
The speaker pointed out the fact that pharmaceutical companies have merged in recent years in order to maintain their position in the market, but this is not the only way to save the industry. “True innovation is not happening inside the pharmaceutical company any more” said Ferrer, Head of Innovation, but there is “the need to go find outside what is no longer generated inside,” which is quantified in some real data such as the 50 alliances that were signed in the past year between some pharmaceutical companies and enterprises and institutions specialized in research. This significant increase of alliances in recent years verifies that the competitive model is changing. “We must assimilate the culture of risk from the entire sector.”
In his speech, Andrés G. Fernández stressed the importance of collaboration with the Academy since - as he said - the expansion of cooperation also enlarges the technology area, which will generate more opportunities. In his own words, “collaboration is necessary because this way the ratio of failure is lower.”
The guest finished his presentation with a brief exposition of the problems the professionals in the pharmaceutical sector are aware of and the proposals coming from Ferrer. Some of these are to create expert companies, hire personnel with experience, promote venture capital and some initiatives in the academic field like specialized courses at the university, internships for students of science in start-ups, and so on.
