The services of Urology, Gynaecology and General and Digestive Surgery have already performed surgery to a total of approximately a hundred patients with the Da Vinci robotic system since its start-up in October 2009.
The incorporation and acquisition of this system has been a commitment of IDIBELL and HUB to keep the centre in the vanguard of applied technological research.
The HUB teams that are using it right now began practicing with an experimental model and undergoing supervised interventions. Then they started performing operations to acquire expertise and the better trained ones have already started to carry out the complex processes which will be commonly used with the Da Vinci system.
The Department of Urology, which was the first one using this system, has already completed the training phase and by early June it had already performed up to 28 radical prostatectomies with excellent results.
On date June 30 the Department of Gynaecology, which began using Da Vinci in November, had made 30 bilateral anexectomies and hysterectomies to acquire expertise. As for the complex processes with an indication of robotic surgery, it had performed 4 Wertheim Meigs operations, 2 aortic lymphadenectomies for ovarian cancer and 2 pelvic floor surgeries. Some of these have been pioneers in the State.
The experience at the Department of General and Digestive Surgery has been smaller so far, since it started using Da Vinci last February this year. Therefore, by early June the sections of Colorectal Surgery, Hepatobiliopancreatic Surgery and Esophagogastric Surgery had done a total of 19 interventions, most of them still in training. However, they have started the first complex processes with specific indication of robotic surgery, which will be the regular ones, such as oncology robotic surgery of rectum and pelvic floor, distal pancreatectomy or Heller myotomy.
