Under the name “Science in the Net,” the fifth edition of the Toolbox has been successful regarding the participation, since it could have the speaker Laura Rosillo - community manager and expert in Human Resources. Around the construction of digital identity in a professional setting, those attending the workshop were introduced to the 2.0 world and a range of digital resources that allow us to get the most of what the Internet offers. The network is too broad to cover it all, so the most important thing is to learn how to speed up the Internet browsing. According to Rosillo, the key is to learn the tools that will make you save work and resources. Bear in mind some key words: information management, personal branding and networking.
A piece of advice from Rosillo was to stop and think of what social networks ask us when we log in. Whereas Facebook says What’s on your mind?, Twitter asks What are you doing? This difference condenses the essence of social networks, in which people, users or web surfers are grouped in different categories. On Facebook you have friends, on Twitter you have followers and on LinkedIn, contacts. Each category gives us clues about the personal information that can be shown in these platforms and even more important, it gives us clues about how we can use them; in other words, the reason why we want our profile to be on each of these social networks.
“Everyone should know what they need to spread their brand,” as Laura Rosillo explained. “The personal blog of a scientist is not the same as his or her Twitter profile of the laboratory where he/she works. The information displayed must be different. Tasks will not be the same for a community manager in a large company than for somebody chairing academic debates.” Rosillo recommended buying the domain with the name or brand position we are interested in, although we do not establish the website immediately. This way we ensure that if we ever need to use it, it will be available for us and we will avoid possible identity thefts.
However, Rosillo advised not to restrict yourself but quite the opposite, try different social networks, platforms or services until you find the resource that fits your personal or business needs best. Among others, she recommended a number of useful databases for researchers - SciVerse, Zotero, TED, etc - and some tools to put various researchers in contact with each other and facilitate the cooperation, as it is Webex or Exploratorium. Other tools such as Mind Map or Wordle were praised too, and websites like Medline Plus, BlipTV or Hootsuite.
