The group, made up of internationally renowned researchers, evaluates scientific papers about life sciences
The director of Cancer Epigenetics and Biology Programme at the IDIBELL, Manel Esteller, joins the group of scientists who participate in F1000, which comprises five Nobel Prize winners, twelve Lasker Award winners and 136 members of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.
Faculty 1000 was created in 2002 as a new space in the network with the aim of evaluating scientific research articles. It counts on the opinions of the main international life sciences researchers. The service offers a systematic and global method for researchers to directly assess the most remarkable documents.
Faculty 1000 publishes monthly 1,500 new evaluations on articles from over three thousand various journals. One of its objectives is to create a consensus map of the most outstanding documents and showing the trends in biology, making it easier for users to browse through it depending on what their interests are.
Manel Esteller is one of the most renowned researchers in the field of epigenetics. This discipline studies changes in gene expression of the genes that are not in the DNA sequence and so they are not hereditary. Therefore, epigenetics can give explanation to some things that escape genetics, like the fact that twins with identical genetic material do not develop cancer at the same time. In this sense, the work of Manel Esteller was crucial to prove that all human tumours have a specific chemical alteration in common: the hypermethylation of tumor suppressor genes.
Esteller has authored over 200 scientific articles and has been editor of several publications of international relevance. He has won numerous awards; the last one is the World Health Summit and Pfizer Award for Innovation in Biomedical Research, which he received in October last year.
