The retirement homes and day centres of the Comprehensive Health Consortium organized activities to mark World Alzheimer's Day, held on 21 September. To be precise workshops and talks addressed to families of people suffering from Alzheimer's were prepared to discuss and learn about the reality of this degenerative disease and its consequences in the family.
For instance, the Francisco Padilla Nursing Home prepared a series of activities dedicated to the patients and relatives of the residents with Alzheimer's disease in order to offer a discussion forum where doubts and concerns towards this disease could be pulled out. Firstly, the documentary film Bicycle, spoon, apple was screened followed by a film forum between participants and specialists working in the centre (psychologist, social worker and occupational therapist). There were as well different memory workshops for users.
On the other hand, the Collblanc Companys Socials Nursing Home planned a whole week of activities in the morning including film screening, activities like laughter therapy, dancing and games to work on psychomotor activity. Roundtables for families and the professionals from the centre have been scheduled this week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons.
Moreover, the exhibition “Wrinkles: the friendly side of Alzheimer’s” has been open to the public in Sant Joan Despí Moisès Broggi Hospital since September 21 and until ends of October, on the central corridor of the building. This is the first action of the hospital addressed to the day-a-day awareness of families and patients suffering from this disease. In October a roundtable including specialists from several health centres will be held to explain the latest developments.
The exhibition, which is coordinated by Dr. Eloisa Velasco (HSJMDB) and sponsored by Novartis, is dedicated to the duties carried out by various professionals and relatives of patients with Alzheimer’s. It was created through parallelisms with the prestigious award-winning illustrated novel Arrugas (Wrinkles) by the writer Paco Roca, winner of national and international awards.
